As you browse the dispensary cannabis selections, you might find yourself wondering what the deal is with CBD vs THC. Some products boast high CBD, low THC, while others boast the exact opposite. So, which is better?

The answer is, it depends. Everyone has their own unique response to cannabis, so different people like the way different strains affect them. Also, different people have different goals when consuming cannabis. Some use it for recreation, while others want to alleviate pain, reduce anxiety, or simply fall asleep faster.

Once you know more about how THC and CBD impact most people, you’ll have a better idea of what combination of these two cannabinoids is best for you.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are molecules found inside of the cannabis plant. The structure of cannabinoids is very similar to the structure of endocannabinoids, molecules that naturally occur in the human body. In fact, endocannabinoids were named after cannabinoids, which were discovered first. Because of this similarity, cannabinoids can attach to endocannabinoid receptors in the human body and affect bodily functions such as mood, appetite, sleep, and more.

So far, researchers have identified 113 different cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. We know very little about the vast majority of these cannabinoids. Two cannabinoids are widely known for their impact on the human body:

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)

THC and CBD are the cannabinoids people pay the most attention to because these two have been studied the most. These two cannabinoids were discovered first, long before the others. With time, we might learn that other cannabinoids play an important role in how people react to cannabis. As of now, most people only pay attention to THC and CBD content and have little understanding of what other cannabinoids do.

CBD vs THC & How They Affect the Body

THC is known for producing the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis. CBD is more known for its relaxing and pain-relieving properties. Because of the “entourage effect,” THC and CBD tend to affect people differently when they are present together compared to when a person takes each of them on their own.

Many cannabis products state their CBD to THC ratio on the packaging. Differing combinations of the two cannabinoids lead to different effects. Here are some common CBD to THC ratios seen in products on the cannabis market:

  • 20:1
  • 10:1
  • 5:1
  • 1:1

A 1 to 1 ratio means there are equal amounts of CBD and THC present. A 20 to 1 ratio indicates there is 20 times as much CBD as THC in the product.

Which Cannabis Products Should I Buy?

Only you can determine what CBD to THC ratio is best for you. The best way to find out is through experimentation.

Start with small amounts, then pay attention to how you feel. If a high THC product causes anxiety, try one with more CBD. Since CBD counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC it will calm you down With time, you’ll figure out what combination of THC and CBD you desire.
